I’ve made no secret of the fact (in this blog space) that mindset is an absolutely essential part of what I do … even though it ‘technically’ doesn’t have anything to do with what I offer as a designer!
The role of mindset as being so essential to entrepreneurship is something I really had zero awareness of before embarking on the entrepreneurship path…
But the thing is… ‘successful’ entrepreneurship is almost êntirely a mindset game. Of course, we need a strategy, but our mindset will sustain us in the moments that make our journey more difficult.
This simple mindset shift made all the difference for me as an entrepreneur and is the #1 thing I’d recommend any new entrepreneur welcome into their mindset…
… and you need to give yourself the kindness and compassion to focus on this special journey rather than on the journeys of those surrounding you in the online space.
Look, I know this is hard, but the moment I stop looking at others’ journeys and instead focused on my own, reminding myself that there is no rush for me to accomplish all that I dream of, I am a much more powerful and grounded entrepreneur!
This is easier said than done. The online space is hella good at bombarding us with competitive, triggering messages. There are the ‘overnight successes’ who make it look effortless to roll into 10K months. There are messages riddled everywhere telling you that you’re not good enough.
But I’m here to tell you that you are enough. And you are absolutely WORTHY of embarking on your own journey. In fact, it’s all that you really have! So focus on your lane!
I want to give you a few tips for how to really step into this mindset shift:
This one is huge for me! I didn’t realize just how harmful some of the messaging I was exposed to at the beginning of my entrepreneurial journey really was!!!
I think one of the most harmful and triggering messages is to “just take the leap, and everything will fall into place!”
Look, I’m all for optimism, and yes, sometimes we need to take a leap of faith to go after our dreams.
But in the online space, I’ll tell you now, this message sets you up for disappointment because that’s not how it goes for most people. Yes, there are the rare exceptions… the “overnight successes”… but they are the exception and not the rule!
For the majority of us in the online space, everything will not just simply fall into place… it takes alot of hard work to get there.
I think what’s harmful about this message is that it puts in your head a set end goal when in reality, business is all about movement. Sometimes your journey will feel invigorating, and at others astonishingly tricky: it’s all part of the journey!
You will go two steps forward and one step back… that’s okay! You’re doing just fine, friend!
And you are not alone.
It’s also important that you…
When we compare ourselves to others, we end up putting alot of unfair expectations and pressure upon ourselves! One thing that gets caught up in this is the idea that your business has to be a part of your life’s purpose, which is just waaaaayyyy tooo much pressure for me!
I like the idea that I can constantly grow and evolve…
That my business doesn’t have to consume my life…
I can constantly choose how I want to make money for my business.
You have the power to determine…
You have the power.
I also encourage you to…
Having some biz besties who just get it, get me, and support my unique journey is absolutely everything to me. I know that I can turn to them to diffuse any competitive or comparison ideas that are in my head, to realign with my true purpose and really to just laugh about some of the strange expectations we set upon ourselves!
But I also find that having a space like this blog to share my thoughts and illustrate my unique passions has been integral to me really shining as my own individual, authentic self in my business. I highly recommend having a creative outlet to turn to as you grow in your business!
